Merida The beautiful city of Merida is the capital of the State of Yucatan. Founded in 1542 by the Spaniard Francisco de Montejo over the ruins of the Mayan city T'ho and receiving its name to evoke the conquerors the city of Merida in Spain. The Cathedral of San Ildefonso was founded with the huge stones dismantled from the pyramids.
Oaxaca Oaxaca is the capital city of the state of Oaxaca and is located near the center of the state in a high mountain valley (5100'), with a population of about 250,000.
Palenque
Puebla Puebla, city (1990 pop. 1,007,170), capital of Puebla state, E central Mexico. Its official name is Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza, in honor of Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza, who defeated the French forces there in 1862.
Taxco
Veracruz The State of Veracruz is located on the Gulf coast with an extension of almost 45,000 square miles. It is bordered by the states of Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco. It's coast extends 425 miles along the Gulf and the climate ranges from humid, tropical in the low coastal regions to the cold heights of the highlands and country's tallest volcano, Orizaba.
